MICAH’s Legislative priorities for 2014

What are MICAH’s Legislative priorities? To advocate and work for justice, equity, and mercy in implementing structural and systemic changes, including the use of our tax resources, so that everyone, without exception, has a decent, safe, accessible and affordable place to call HOME!

HF 2112 HOME- Housing Opportunities Made Equitable: This bill will provide $50 Million to assist People of Color and American Indians with the opportunity to become homeowners through more accessible mortgage financing and enhanced financial capacity training to increase probability of successful homeownership. Currently, Minnesota has the greatest disparity in homeownership attainment between White, non –Hispanic/Latino and People of Color in the country!

HF 2112 supported by: African American Leadership Forum, Build Wealth MN, MICAH, Integrated Community Solutions, Council on Black Minnesotans, African Immigrant Services (AIS), Asian Pacific American Housing Consortium, Aurora St Anthony NDC, Camphor Fiscally Fit, Chicano Latino Affairs Council, Childrens Hope International/R&R Family Centers,CLUES (Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio, Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans, Hmong American Partnership, Housing For All, Jewish Community Action (JCA), Lao Assistance Center, Minnesota Tenant’s Union, Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, Model Cities, Northside Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC), Second Chance Coalition, and Voice in the Wilderness

Federal:
- HR 1213. This bill will raise $20 Billion/year for affordable housing by changing mortgage interest deduction to a non-refundable Tax Credit.
State:
- HF 2112 HOME (Housing Opportunities Made Equitable). This will provide $50 Million to assist People of Color and American Indians with the opportunity to become homeowners through more accessible mortgage financing and enhanced financial capacity training to increase probability of successful homeownership.

- HF 2031 SF1977 HOMES For All Legislative Agenda: $100 Million for Bonding to build and rehabilitate affordable housing.

- HF 1941 Mortgage Foreclosure Mediation.

- Increase MFIP grants so families on temporary assistance can afford housing.

- Council on Black Minnesotans: Support HF 1475 Increase funding to the Human Rights Department to insure compliance with Civil Right Laws and HF 1929 Criminal Justice. COBM supports the HOME Bill HF2112.

- Second Chance: Voter’s Rights and addressing barriers to accessing jobs and affordable housing. Second Chance supports Home Bill HF2112.

- Jobs NOW: Increase Minimum wage and JRLC: Increase Minimum wage, eliminate pay day lending

Metro Region:
Create affordable housing opportunities along the 8 transit corridors in the region.
MICAH members are working hard to pass strong affordable housing and economic stability policies along the Central, Bottineau, Gateway and Southwest Corridors.
